Call of Duty Goes Cyberpunk? Black Ops III Trailer Released

The words “Call of Duty” are enough to put a lot of people off, but perhaps not when it starts to venture into cyberpunk territory. Take a look at the latest “Ember” trailer below.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

If you didn’t know it was CoD, you might mistake it for a movie trailer – maybe even for the in-development Deus Ex movie! It sees advances in biotechnology and the rise of cybernetics, as well as the struggle between those who have and those who don’t. Super soldiers and terrorist attacks on biotech corporations add to the cyberpunk fiction, which is good to see.

This new avenue is welcome, but how are Treyarch (the developers) going to surprise us? What new story or gameplay elements will there be that we haven’t seen before in either the Call of Duty or Deus Ex franchises? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Zymepunk was drawn into the world of cyberpunk by Deus Ex and Blade Runner and now looks both back and forwards in time for anything that may come close to those masterpieces.

  1. This…looks like coat tail riding.
Am I wrong? I mean yeah, these are established tropes in the cyberpunk genre, but from a mainstream, relatively generic man-shoot franchise. so soon after Deus Ex’s most recent success?
Coat tail riding is what I thought of first. Totally.

  2. I think it might be a good thing. Even if this story is shallow and vapid (as is almost guaranteed from this franchise) hopefully it will shine some billion dollar spotlights on the cyberpunk genre.

  3. Absolutely nothing in common with Blacklight: Retribution, not even the in-game wall hack. Oh wait, BR is free to play, legal action alert!
